Literally meaning a "darkened room", the camera obscura is the deceptively simple inside of a camera. A room is made light-proof except for a small pinhole through which light can pass. Images of the observable, fleeting world just outside come through upside down and backwards. The experience transports the viewer into the magic of photography as it was first experienced more than150 years ago. I build these in collaboration with students and other artists as a teaching and community engagement tool—it never ceases to fascinate and delight its audience.
